Parks & Nature

If you enjoy nature and the outdoors, pick from any of these adventures or locations for something to do. Choose according to the weather and tides. e.g. Climbing Karioi is best done when views can be enjoyed. Wainui Bush Park is ok to do if its raining and you have a good jacket.
Start the hike from the Ruapuke side. (Follow signs from Te Mata Road). Only attempt if you have a reasonable level of fitness and some cross trainers. Do it on a sunny day to see views of Aotea and Kawhia Harbours. Hike is 3 hours return, with beautiful bird sightings throughout the native bush, especially near the summit.

A lesser known deserted beach, great for long walks, surfing, flying a kite or just being with nature. Equal distance from our place as it is to go to better known Ngaranui Beach. Just don't go there if the wind is strong and coming from the west.

Beautiful thing to do in wet or sunny weather. If mediation is your thing, try to go early, so you can enjoy the falls to yourselves. A good workout climbing the stairs afterwards will get you in the mood for breakfast in town.

Definitely worth winding your way slowly around the dirt road to Te Toto Gorge. Imagine yourself watching as dinosaurs below would have wandered the land below. Start your walk here up Mt Karioi if you have a spare 5 hours. Incredible views and workout. Good boots, water and a snack essential. Some parts require scaling up rope cliffs.
