Sightseeing

Rhinefield Ornamental drive in Bolderwood south of Burley has lovely giant redwoods and sequoia trees and all the ponies and deer etc roaming, you can go en-route to Lymington. (There’s always an ice cream van there that will appeal to youngsters) There’s a tall trees trail that’s about a mile and a half loop. There’s also the deer sanctuary in there with a viewing platform by the main Bolderwood car park. A great place to take a picnic. Or there are lots of pubs in the area around Lymington. Hatchet Pond near Beaulieu, Brockenhurst is a wonderful nature reserve and a good place for seeing the New Forest ponies. There’s a 2 mile loop trail by the pond. The Motor Museum in Beaulieu is less then 3 miles from there and also worth a visit, as is the village itself. Again, there are lots of pubs in the area for lunch if you don’t want to picnic. The Foresters Arms in Blissford is good and very nearby is the Abbots Well car park. Fabulous walks across the forest from there.

Lymington is a lovely destination, there’s a really good Fish and Chip shop up the high street that we use, we then take our fish and chips down to the marina to eat, lots of seats there and lots of places to get delicious New Forest Icecream afterwards! You can then go for a lovely walk along the coast at Keyhaven next door (there’s a pub there called The Gun if you prefer that to F&C). Lots of beautiful birds to see in the marshes, Hurst Castle and The Needles can be seen from the walk along the sea wall.

Mudeford is also fun for children to go crabbing and you can get the ferry across to Hengistbury Head, there’s a cafe there. Or go to Hengistbury (which is what we do) and you can take the little train (or walk coast route or road) to the huts and cafe and you can cross on the ferry to Mudeford for crabbing for an hour or two.

Closer to home is the Horse and Groom at Woodgreen which Is just a few minutes down the road (they also do take-always) there are ponies and donkeys frequently on the road outside! There are lovely walks up the road to Hale Purlieu. Both the Wooden Spoon and The Goat in nearby Downton are popular pubs (5-10 mins down the lane from us).

The New Forest Lavender Tearooms in Landford just off the A36 is lovely for a light lunch or morning tea. (They’re open Wednesday to Saturday). I think since lockdown you need to book. 01794 323314 newforestlavender@btinternet.com

Nomansland has a good french restaurant Les Mirabelles (also known as Le Frog bar and bistro) and Claude who owns it does a very good lunch. 01794 390205 Again there are ponies etc usually outside and it’s nice to walk around. You’d need to book and he’s closed Sundays and Mondays.
