This temple’s builder, Yamaoka Tesshu, was one of the last retainers for the Tokugawa shogunate and a highly respected force for education in the imperial restoration that followed. He was famous for his calligraphy, which you can see samples of here. It’s an excellent place to feel the vestiges of the brave samurai. A couple of times a year, the temple shows an incredibly rare collection of ghost scrolls drawn in the nihonga style by Sanyutei Encho, a pupil of Tesshu’s. He’s also known as a master of the rakugo style of storytelling, and the temple holds special events that bring together famous rakugo families.
