A short walk of less than 300 metres from the Kombi Cottage will get you to the Goolwa train station where you can aboard the Cockle Train. Goolwa has an operating Steam train and Paddle steamer both operating tours. Local visitor information will inform travellers how to book.
The Cockle Train travels along the oldest steel railed railway in Australia dating back to 1854 when it was constructed to provide a link between the River Murray and the ocean wharfs at Pt Elliot and later at Victor Harbor. Tickets are available at the Goolwa, Port Elliot & Victor Harbour Railway…
Our kids love this train - and we secretly do too! It's a great half hour trip one way, with a half hour stop, then half an hour return. Lovely sea views along the way. If you start at Victor then you can visit the brewery right by the train station in Goolwa!

“Every Adelaide child has fond memories of walking the jetty or catching the horse drawn tram to Granite Island to search for fairy penguins after visiting the whale information centre on the foreshore”

“The current owners, the Gorman and Horrocks family have been operating the Port Elliot Bakery since 1989. Some people go for the pies and pasties and love popular flavours like the steak pie and the chicken korma pie, but I must confess we go for the sweets. Also a famous Inst spot.”

“A short drive away, this is the place where the Murray meets the Sea. Great sunset views, bird spotting, and a small safe beach for the kids. Pop up Caravan selling fish and chips is there as well - best fish and chips you will have!”
