The year in which the temple was established is unknown. The main deity is the god of treasure, Bishamonten (also known as Vaisravans); it is said to have belonged to a temple in the area to the south of Gokurakuji called Enozusho (a settlement that existed in the Nara and Heian periods). The grounds of the temple contain a rather severe-looking stone lantern depicting the aforementioned deity. The lantern bears the mark of having been created in March 1336 and has been designated as an important cultural artifact. One theory holds that it was donated by Masashige Kusunoki, who was conceived after prayers offered at the Gokurakuji. Gokurakuji Temple is 8 minutes walk from here.
