It is primarily known for the Battle of Cannae, in which the numerically superior Roman army suffered a disastrous defeat by Hannibal in 216 BC during the Punic Wars. The ruins have hardly been excavated and you will probably be the only tourists there, but the views are amazing. It’s a gem in history and a perfect stop near one of our favorite restaurants Antichi Sapori.
