Historical route taken by the early settlers who arrived by ship at the port of Lyttelton
If you are quite fit and looking for a challenging walk that is quite steep instead of driving through the tunnel you can walk up and over the bridle path walkway. This is where the first four ships came into port in 1850s and families walked over wearing their Victorian attire and carrying all their belongings with no idea what to expect.
Right behind the Boatique House starts the Bridle Path, a small footpath to an area of exiting 30+ km cross country walks, also for beginners. Be it direction East to Godley Head Park (one way 15 km) or West to Marleys Hill (one way 12 km), both tours are worth a day. But don't forget your water and a picnic basket.
