Who is a tour guide and what registration rules apply when I am a tour guide?

The tour guiding industry was recently liberalized in Spain, so that no specific authorization, accreditation or professional qualification is formally required for providing tour guiding services. Despite this liberalization, official tour guides have been recently recognised as those that have passed qualification exams that certify their tourism education.

Even if no authorization, accreditation or professional qualification is required, please note that internal regulations applicable in certain monuments or cultural places require that only official tour guides are entitled to work in such places.

Hosts looking for information on authorizations, and tour guiding information generally, can refer to the most recent regulations, the official tourism website of Madrid or APIT which is the non-profit professional association of tour guides and a member of the greater Spanish Confederation of Tourist Guides.

Is there anything else I should know when I give guided tours?

Yes. Hosts who have questions or are otherwise unsure and need further information should contact their local city authority, or seek advice from a legal professional. You may also consider consulting an insurance broker or specialist to find out what coverages you may want to take out.
