The North Carolina section of the A.T. rises to spectacular summits — including the 6,643-foot Clingmans Dome, the highest mountain on the A.T. — and drops into the dark and steep walls of the Nantahala River Gorge.
The Appalachian trail runs along the top of the Great Smokey Mountains. The closest way to get to it that we know of for a day hike is at the end of Tennessee Highway 32. There is limited parking at the the top also.
Myriad trails for day-hikes, overnight hikes, or to meet up with AT-through-hikers.
