This is a classic hike from downtown Mill Valley that takes you through redwoods, high scrubland, fern-lined ravines, to stunning ocean views. Go as far as you want: it’s 8 miles all the way to the ocean at Stinson Beach. The hike starts with a climb up the Dipsea Steps up to the Panoramic Highway. It’s strenuous, but the reward is unbeatable when you top out. White-crowned sparrows, with their yellow bills and white head stripes, will lure you further into their forest habitat.

One of our favorite hikiing trails. Trail head is in Old Mill park in downtown MV.
A big 7-mile hike that starts close to the cottage (near Old Mill Park) and ends at Stinson Beach. There is a bus (Stagecoach) that brings you back to the Mill Valley Safeway, but it does require coordination to get from the Safeway back to the cottage (2+ miles away)
A visit to Mill Valley isn't complete without a visit to the historic Dipsea Trail, home of the 2nd-oldest footrace in the USA (behind only the Boston Marathon). The trail starts with three long flights of stairs taking you ~700 steps up from redwood-filled Old Mill Park, dips down into Muir Woods, then climbs again to cross the shoulder of Mt. Tamalpais before a long scenic downhill to end at Stinson Beach.
