The dominant building of Terra Murata is the Palazzo d'Avalos, constructed in the 16th century along with the walls by the D'Avalos family, who were governors of the island until the 18th century. In 1830, the building was converted into a prison and was permanently closed only in 1988. The former prison consists of the urban development from the late 16th century, initiated by Cardinal Innico d'Avalos and designed by architects Cavagna and Tortelli. It served first as a noble palace and later as a royal palace of the Bourbons, who in 1815 transformed it into a military school and then into a prison for the kingdom with subsequent expansions. The monumental complex includes the Palazzo D'avalos, the courtyard, the Guard Barracks, the Single Cell Building, the Veterans Building, the Medical Facility, the Director's House, and the Spianata agricultural estate. This unified system is inseparable from the monumental emergence represented by the Palazzo d'Avalos. Surpassing artistic and historical interest, it's particularly important for its unique characteristics that mark its place in the history of Renaissance architecture. It also holds value as a testament to the political, military, and urban history of the island.

vecchio carcere situato nel punto piu' alto dell' isola da cui ammirare viste mozzafiato e un luogo molto suggestivo.
Bellissima la struttura dell'ex carcere strutturato all'interno del castello d'Avalos.
Un percorso della durata di 60 minuti all'interno del Palazzo D'Avalos (successivamente convertito in penitenziario - attivo fino al 1987) , tra le celle e gli androni rinascimentali, tra le vecchie divise, le scarpe sul pavimento polveroso e poi le brande arrugginite, le balle di cotone un tempo lavorate nell’opificio, e finanche il lettino per gli interventi ambulatoriali. Tutto giace uguale a se stesso. Nel 1978 venne chiuso il carcere vecchio (Palazzo d’Avalos) e nel 1988 definitivamente abbandonato anche il carcere nuovo.
