This cloud forest is a cool retreat from the hot Kona coast. A lush ʻōhiʻa and hāpuʻu tree fern forest, this undeveloped trail is a real gem. Access the official trailhead from the end of Makahi Street (off Kaloko Drive). Park on the side of the road and be respectful of neighboring properties. You feel as you just stepped into Jurassic Park forest.
This is a nice little trail. There aren't any big vistas or any big points of interest, but it's nice change from hiking on the beach or volcanic rock. The full loop is about 4 miles long, and it took me around 90 minutes to get through it. Most folks should be fine hiking this, but there are a few spots where the elevation makes things a little challenging. There is no parking lot or facilities. Just drive to the end of the street and park on the side of the road. The trailhead is right where the pavement stops.

This is a fun four mile loop trip on a forested hillside. Park your car along the road at the end of Makahi St. Take the trail 30 steps or so and you will come to the sign board, where you take a right to go around counterclockwise. Follow the map and the cairns and you won’t get lost.
Awesome Hiking through a cloud forest with giant ferns and fairies!
