Boasting stunning views over Auckland City, across the eastern bays and around to Rangitoto Island and northwards, North Head is a beautiful spot to visit. Spend an hour or more exploring the walks, caves, beaches and historic tunnels, or do it local style and slide down the grassy slopes on an old cardboard box.
Stunning views of Auckland city and Auckland harbour, this lovely park has walks, history and geography - great for families, individuals, couples. Not good for wheelchair access but ok for a mountain buggy for young ones. Guests can explore the tunnels free of charge (take your cell phone for a torch), walk around the numerous walking trails, discover a private beach or two, occasionally see a NZ fur seal or little blue penguin and even take some cardboard (your host might have some if you ask) and get the kids to slide down the grassy slopes - great fun for toddlers through to teens.

You can see the gun emplacements set up in the 1890s and added to every time the world went to war. It is only a short walk from the Devonport Ferry.
In my view, North Head and the nearby Mount Victoria offer the best viewpoints in Auckland. Bring a picnic rug, some food and drink, and just sit and watch the boats pass by from this elevated lookout. It does mean a trip over the Harbour Bridge, or a ferry ride to Devonport, but on a sunny day, it is so worth it.
