Built in 1967 during New Haven’s “Model City” urban renewal era, the Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church is another brutalist architectural gem. Designed by New York-based architect John M. Johansen, the church resembles an artichoke in plan, with cut-stone exterior walls set in patterns of vertical slabs and large windows.
