De Schorren. Schorren is another word for salt marshes: higher parts at the foot of the Waddenzee dike. The salt marshes are usually dry – only during spring tides or storm surges the area is flooded. At 'normal' high tide, the water flows into the area via the creeks, but the higher parts remain dry. In 1982 a colony of spoonbills settled on De Schorren. In the spring about sixty to seventy pairs breed here. Dams have been built around the colony to protect the spoonbills from high water. Nevertheless, the birds themselves also take high tide into account: they build nests up to sixty centimeters high. The birds find food on the mudflats, where they mainly fish for shrimps. Spoonbills are not the only birds that have found an ideal breeding spot on De Schorren. The eider, various types of gulls, the sandwich tern and the oystercatcher also like to nest on the dried up mudflats. Like many ducks, sandpipers, curlews and black-tailed godwits, among others, they fish for the countless food that the mudflats are rich in, such as shrimp, piers and shellfish. Numerous birds rest on De Schorren after they have eaten their fill during their journey south or back. Because De Schorren is completely submerged during storm surges or spring tides, only plants that can withstand salt grow there. Sea lavender, sea aster, samphire and salt-melted for example. These plants are of great importance for the survival of the salt marshes – they even build them: the roots hold the silt from the sea. Because the waves cannot prevent the salt marshes from being knocked away during storm surges or spring tides, dams have been constructed. Binoculars In order to give the special plants and breeding birds as much rest as possible, De Schorren is not freely accessible to the public. The area is easy to oversee from the dike, although it is advisable to bring binoculars. If you would like to explore the area on foot, you can book an excursion and see the natural beauty up close.
