This circular walk through ‘Waterfall Country’ in the Brecon Beacons visits four stunning falls set in beautiful woodlands. Tucked away on the southern slopes of the Fforest Fawr massif, west of Merthyr Tydfil, Waterfall Country is part of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the forest Fawr Geopark, with steep, tree-lined gorges and an abundance of tumbling water. The popular Four Falls trail starts at the Cwm Porth car park, where the River Mellte vanishes into the largest cave entrance in Wales, then leads to the spectacular waterfalls of Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd y Pannwr and Sgwd-yr-Eira. Each waterfall is incredibly impressive but the best is saved for last at Sgwd-yr-Eira, where if you’re feeling brave enough you can walk behind the cascades on a rocky (and slippery) path that creeps beneath the veil of tumbling water. This route was voted 40th in a 2017 ITV poll to find Britain’s Favourite Walk. Carpark: Gwaun Hepste – Four Falls Trail Car Park, Unnamed Road, Aberdare CF44 9JF. (51.800032, -3.544613)
