This area has a village-like atmosphere. It is now a cosmopolitan and multicultural district, with plenty of small shops and bistros or artisanal businesses. Most of the people on the streets are local residents, with few passers-by, and the area is at its most lively in the evenings. It has remained faithful to its distinctive working class character, in an increasingly sanitized Paris. It is here that the small tree-lined Place Saint-Marthe is located, almost indistinguishable at the heart of a network of narrow roads. One of these, the Rue Saint-Marthe, with its laundry drying at the windows and Mediterranean flavor, is reminiscent of the roads of Naples or Marseille. Full of art and culture, and not merely photogenic, this is an animated locality, with bistros where you can sit outside, artists’ workshops, concerts, small designer stores, record shops, flea markets and unique restaurants offering culinary specialties from all over the world, for example, from Africa and South America.
