Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve is part of the Duddon Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest, there is a beautiful sandy beach and the sand dunes are home to Natterjack toads, numerous butterfly species and more than 600 wildflowers. The estuary itself feeds a wide variety of wading birds. There is a car park at the site, although it is possible to walk to Sandscale Haws from the cottage – it is a very long walk and you would have to walk on an outgoing tide. We recommend walking from Askam-in-Furness (park at the bottom of Parklands Drive [LA16 7JP] and head towards the sea), you can walk along the beach in less than an hour – it is a lovely walk on a sunny day.

Beautiful walk along the dunes and sandy shore. Fabulous views of the south Lakeland fells. The car park is National Trust and there is a small hot drinks cabin, otherwise pack a picnic!
