The Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo was built in the 16th century, and sits in the same area of the lighthouse, and more than just a viewing point, it also doubles up as a surf museum, where boards from the most famous big wave surfers are on display, truly a spellbinding view, making this one of the most worthwhile attractions in Nazare. The Lighthouse sits on the tip of the peninsula and is perched firmly on a dramatic cliff’s edge, and it is the perfect place to take in and view Nazaré’s world-famous, magnificent, crashing waves, these waves are as uncertain as they are exclusive, they aren’t always there, they rely on storms in high sea that will bring the swells. The Nazare Canyon is the cause of such incredibly monster waves, a puzzling geological phenomenon 5.000 meters deep and about 230 km long. The big wave season begins in November and ends in February, attracting top surfers from all over the world.
