The Teatro, located in the Montecasino Casino and Entertainment complex in northern Johannesburg, is the biggest theatre in South Africa and one of the biggest lyric theatres in the world with a capacity of 1 870 people. The theatre has been acoustically designed to host large-scale musical productions and has an orchestra pit that can house a full chamber orchestra. The Teatro opened its doors in May 2007 with a blockbuster production of The Lion King, co-produced by Lebo M and Pieter Toerien. The musical went on to become the longest-running and most successful show in South Africa. Playing to a full house for 36 weeks running, The Lion King was watched by more than 550 000 people. Since The Lion King closed in February 2008, a number of other highly successful local and international productions have taken to the Teatro’s stage, including Lord of the Dance, Cats, War Horse, The Sound of Music and Mamma Mia! The Teatro is set in the middle of the Montecasino complex facing a large open-air piazza which is surrounded by restaurants, cafes and bars. Within the casino complex there are also a number of hotels, a cinema, 24hour casino, clubs and other entertainment options for before or after a visit to the theatre.
