Right upon reaching the beach when arriving by the gravel road from the summerhouse, you could go for a walk in Mindelunden (Memorial Grove). That is the name of the small area covered with heath and forest, because a monumental stone was put there after the occupation of Denmark during World War II to pay tribute to five resistance fighters. These five young men were caught by Gestapo, the secret German state police, after having sabotaged railway bridges close to the city of Langå. They were all executed on Skæring Heath in 1943. The stone is still there and every year on May 4th – the date Denmark was liberated – flowers are laid down in front of it. After the war, the area served as a shooting range for the Danish military for a number of years, and when my brother and I were kids, it was still possible to find firearm projectiles in the small mound in the grove.
