This is a really unique restaurant which is run by a charity, from Cardiff prison. Its aim is to rehabilitate offenders through training and giving a career, and what's more the food is fine-dining at a decent price. All the leather upholstery and boardroom tables are made by prisoners at HMP Frankland and poetry is from former Clink trainees. The Clink Restaurant is consistently in the top 10 restaurants in Cardiff on TripAdvisor - well worth a visit if you can get a table booked.

Highly recommended, Dine at Cardiff Prison. No, that’s not a typo – you really can dine at Her Majesty’s pleasure in Cardiff. You don’t need to suffer prison food, either. The Clink is a gourmet dining experience and an opportunity for prisoners to rehabilitate and gain new skills and experience in the hospitality industry. It works, too – those who prepare and serve your delicious food are much less likely to re-offend. Expect first-class cuisine made with fresh local ingredients and served in quite an elegant setting. Just don’t expect any alcohol because it’s banned on prison grounds.

Best for: Casual dining, special occasions This has the most decidedly unglamorous address – Her Majesty’s Prison, Knox Road, Cardiff – and is staffed by serving ‘guests’ of said establishment. It has been lauded as one of the best fine dining restaurants in Wales, with a bright, buzzy and welcoming interior. The menu offers riffs on classic dishes made with seasonally appropriate ingredients, many grown on the Prescoed prison farm.
