Here you will find a small artisan marketplace where you can buy the most amazing typical costarican crafts and souvenirs. From earrings and bracelets, to Costa Rica t-shirts, hammocks and amazing decorative items to take back home.
This plaza is between the Jade Museum and the National Museum of Costa Rica. It serves as a prelude to the National Museum of Costa Rica , located in the old Bellavista Barracks, site where the abolition of the Costa Rican army took place on December 1, 1948, an important milestone in Costa Rican history and identity.
Established on November 7, 1989, with the assistance of the Presidents of America. It celebrates the centenary of the political events of 1889, where the people demanded respect for the election of José Joaquín Rodríguez for the position of President of the Republic; in what has been called “The centenary of Democracy”. The design of the square is by Arq. Edwin Villalta. One of the purposes of its construction was to give a better visual perspective to the West façade of the National Museum. As a project, it generated controversy due to the demolition of some residences of heritage value that were found on the site.
