Just extraordinary... Lascaux, registered as a the World Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, is the finest of all prehistoric painted caves made by Cro Magnon man. Discovered by 4 young boys on Sept 12, 1940, the Lascaux cave in Montignac is situated in the Vézère Valley in the Département of Dordogne-Périgord. After the Second World War, Lascaux was open to the public until 1963, but the carbon dioxide soon began to damage the prehistoric paintings. Today, the original Lascaux cave is closed, but Lascaux 4, an exact replica, is well worth the visit!
