Spanish: Pedro Claver (26 June 1581 – 8 September 1654) was a Spanish Jesuit priest and missionary born in Verdú (Catalonia) who, due to his life and work, became the patron saint of slaves, the Republic of Colombia and ministry to African Americans. During the 40 years of his ministry in Colombia it is estimated he personally baptized around 300,000 people. He is also patron saint for seafarers.

The temple is part of a set of religious buildings that is complemented by the Cloister of San Pedro Claver and the archaeological museum. It was built between 1580 and 1654, under the parameters of colonial constructions. It was originally known as the church of San Juan de Dios, since 1622 it was called the church of San Ignacio de Loyola and nowadays it is called San Pedro Claver. Due to its historical significance, architectural and cultural value, the temple was declared a National Monument on November 2, 1995.

One of the most important saints in Catholicism lived in Cartagena. San Pedro Claver was the slaves of the slaves and a modern day icon for human rights. The sancturay is very active in human rights issues in Colombia and worth visiting.
